McNamee describes how the underlying algorithms in Facebook appeal to our lizard brain with emotions such as fear and anger, which in turn induce us to spend more time on the platform, which is obviously more valuable to Facebook. Zucked traces the path McNamee took, and it is a fascinating journey whose destiny is presently unclear. Far from being a lone wolf, McNamee was soon connected to a growing number of experts who shared their concerns. When all McNamee heard were crickets, he began to reach outside the company for a smell test to see if he was alone in his concerns. When McNamee’s Facebook concerns grew, well before the 2016 US elections, he understandably believed his memo to Zuck and Sandberg would quickly spark a discussion. It was McNamee who suggested Zuck hire Sheryl Sandberg. McNamee was an early investor in Facebook, and became Zuckerberg’s mentor.
